Description:
“Freiburg im Breisgau” is a classic German travel poster designed by Jupp Wiertz (1888–1939), one of the most influential European poster artists of the interwar period. Created in the 1930s, the poster was part of Germany’s tourism promotion and presents Freiburg as “Die Stadt des Waldes, des Weines und der Gotik” (“the city of forests, wine, and Gothic architecture”). It prominently features the Freiburg Minster, the historic old town, vineyards symbolizing the region’s wine culture, and the Schauinsland cable car, which had opened in 1930 and quickly became a modern landmark. Stylistically, the poster reflects Wiertz’s signature approach: painterly realism combined with strong colour contrasts and a romanticized sense of place, designed to evoke both cultural heritage and scenic allure.
Condition & Important Notes
