Description
Olev Subbi (1930–2013) was a renowned Estonian painter celebrated for his vibrant use of colour and poetic depictions of memory, nature, and harmony. His works, encompassing landscapes, nudes, portraits, and abstract compositions, often evoke nostalgia and reflect his personal experiences. Subbi’s art journey was marked by resilience; deported to Siberia from 1949 to 1957, he resumed his studies upon return, graduating from the Estonian State Art Institute in 1962. Subbi has received several honours, including the Order of the White Star (2000) and the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2005). In 2025, the Estonian National Museum commemorated his 95th birth anniversary with the largest-ever solo exhibition of his works, titled “Striving for Perfection”.
