Description
Alfred Kongo (1906-1990) was an Estonian painter known for his richly coloured landscapes, still lifes and floral motifs. He studied at the Pallas Art School in Tartu from 1929 to 1940, under teachers such as Ado Vabbe and later taught at the State Art Institute in Tartu. Despite having his early exhibition opportunities restricted under Soviet-era censorship, Kongo continued developing his style rooted in pre-war Estonian painting traditions, and from the 1960s onward became increasingly active and recognised, culminating in state honours such as the title Merited Artist of the Estonian SSR.
